What to look for when buying a boat
- A couple of the biggest things to look for would be the
hull design and
weight distribution.
There are many different boat manufacturers out there with different
styles.
- There are many different
styles of rivers. Anything from serious whitewater to a
calm river with occasional 1' of chop. There are boats designed
for all conditions.
- Make sure the interior
layout will suit your styles of fishing.
- Be careful when deciding on your boat. Don't buy a boat just
because the dealer puts a Jetmotor on it. This happens a bunch, so
dealers can reduce their inventory. You need to find the proper hull
design/layout.
HULL DESIGN
Make sure the boat you are looking at has a
good hull design for what you
will be needing it for.
WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
Very Important!
- This is key in any boat, but especially a river boat.
- Do not let whoever is selling you a boat load down the back of your
boat with 12+ gallons of fuel, two batteries, along with a motor.
You will more than likely have a very heavy boat in the rear.
- Watch out for fuel tanks under the front deck. This can cause
your boat to plow water which in turn can make you have to step up in
horse power to make up for it.
- If you are too heavy in the rear of your boat, you can gain 3+
inches of river clearance just by balancing it out.
IF YOUR BOAT IS NOSE HEAVY, HERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS YOU WILL HAVE:
- Plows the water when planing (trying to plane out)
- When anchoring, takes much more chain/weight to hold you
- If you row your boat, than guess what! It will row very hard
also. Not only would the boat plow on plane, it will plow while
being anchored also.
THE ABOVE TIPS ARE JUST A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS TO
CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING YOUR BOAT.
